UK Ensemble
Dataset
Summary
Short Description:
The Met Office Global and Regional Ensemble Prediction System - UK (MOGREPS-UK)
2km dataset is generated by a high-resolution, regional ensemble weather
prediction system covering the UK, Ireland, surrounding waters and the near
continent. It is based on the Unified Model framework, which is used for both
weather and climate prediction at the Met Office. MOGREPS-UK operates on a
rotated pole grid, with grid-spacing stretching from ~2.2 km over the UK to ~4
km towards the edges, but the forecast data are reprojected onto a uniform 2km
Lambert Azimuthal Equal Area grid for data sharing. The model provides detailed
forecasts of atmospheric and surface parameters. Forecasts are generated hourly
with runs out to 126 hours ahead. It provides probabilistic forecasts,
supporting risk-based decision-making in meteorology and related fields. Each
model run consists of 3 separate forecasts (ensemble members), each with
slightly varied initial conditions, to capture forecast uncertainty and provide
a range of possible outcomes. However, 3 ensemble members is not sufficient to
capture the uncertainty. This system is designed to be used by combining these
3-member ensembles over 6 cycles to provide a larger (time-lagged) 18 member
ensemble which will provide a much better representation of the probabilities.
